A transformer’s design affects more than its electrical performance. The position and orientation of a valve can also influence how easily maintenance personnel carry out their work.
For a 20MVA 66/33kV oil-immersed transformer supplied for a ZESCO project in Zambia, MIRACLE PE coordinated a modification to the top oil-filtering valve arrangement following feedback during customer inspection. The aim was to improve oil-flow control and make on-site operation more convenient.
Listening to the Customer’s Operational Concerns
During inspection, the customer raised a concern about the original top-mounted butterfly valve. Its opening direction could allow oil to splash towards the operator when opened under certain conditions.
For the customer, this was a practical maintenance issue: how could site personnel access and operate the valve with better control over the oil discharge?
We discussed the concern with the engineers involved and reviewed the arrangement from the operator’s perspective.
Turning Feedback into a Design Change
Following the discussion, the original butterfly valve arrangement was replaced with a horizontally installed ball valve and a guiding pipe.
The modification addressed both the valve orientation and the discharge path. By redirecting the oil flow, the revised arrangement was designed to reduce the risk of oil splashing towards personnel and make oil discharge easier to manage.
The improvement came from adapting the complete arrangement to the intended operation, rather than simply changing the valve type.
What the Modification Means for the Customer
The revised arrangement offers practical benefits for on-site maintenance:
- More controlled discharge: The guiding pipe directs oil along a defined path.
- Reduced exposure to splashing: The outlet orientation helps direct discharged oil away from the operating position.
- Greater operating convenience: The layout takes the customer’s maintenance needs into account.
Safe operation still requires the correct procedures and suitable equipment. The modification supports those procedures by improving the physical arrangement.
Responsive Support Beyond the Specification Sheet
Customer inspections are an opportunity to understand how equipment will be used in practice. In this project, the customer’s feedback led to a specific engineering adjustment.
MIRACLE PE’s role was to listen to the concern, coordinate the technical discussion and help translate the agreed solution into a design change. This is how we approach project support: paying attention to the details that matter to the people who operate and maintain the equipment.
